Log assignment 3 is a great example of critical
thinking that took place this term in design and society. Through this
assignment we had to use different sources to discover more about the
buildings we call home.
Log Assignment 3
-
According to Brands definition the room I reside in is a single
residential dorm room. The building is called Broadway and is a modern
style apartment structure and is in the shape of an “L”. The square
footage of a double unit room is 325 square feet, and was completed in
the fall of 2004. Broadway contains the largest eco-roof in Portland.
-
Broadway is built with steel framing with plaster walls. The foundation
is made of concrete with no basement or attic. This building does not
include any outbuilding of any kind.
- The
exterior surface of Broadway is made of concrete, metal, brick, windows,
and glass. Broadway is known for its extreme energy conservation
measures. It has an eco-roof and is LEEDS certified.
- Air
conditioning is one thing individual rooms in Broadway do not have. Yet
heating is in every room including the classrooms on the 2nd
floor. Broadway contains a large ventilation system in every room and
hallways. Since Broadway was built in 2004 the wiring is extremely new.
The pluming is also up to date featuring a dual flush toilet in every
room to save water.
Critical Thinking Example 2
This is a picture of our 2D plan of reconstruction and
redesigning a large section of the PSU campus.
This is the final step of our project. We had to first
observe the paths people take, sit, park, stand, and ride bikes and make a
large section of the PSU campus a better redesigned space. Second, we
designed our 2D model of the buildings. And third, we created and presented
our 3D model. This took much critical thinking in designing this area
because we had to make a space that people could make better use of, which
made every step a critical thinking process.
