THE CITY BY THE BAY

San Francisco / California

Why
"the City by the Bay"?

Keeping it simple, San Francisco’s nickname refers to its location at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula around the San Francisco Bay. The Bay is one of the world’s finest natural harbors with Treasure, Yerba Buena, Angel, and Alcatraz islands within it, and several bridges connecting its eastern and western shores.

Things to See

Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge

Crossing the strait of the Golden Gate from San Francisco to the Marin headlands for 1.7 miles is the world-renowned Golden Gate Bridge. It was opened in 1937 and has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Painted Ladies

Painted Ladies

Otherwise known as “Postcard Row" or the “Seven Sisters," are a row of colorful Victorian houses located across from Alamo Square in the neighborhood of Haight Ashbury. These Queen Anne-style homes are one of the thousands built in San Francisco during its booming growth at the end of the 19th-century.

Lombard Street

Lombard Street

Stretching from The Presidio east to The Embarcadero, the “Crookedest Street in the World” is located along the eastern segment in the Russian Hill neighborhood. The steep, hilly street was created with eight sharp hairpin turns to switchback down the one-way hill past beautiful Victorian mansions.
