Biographical Details:

Recent work by Patricia Law Hatcher has identified Jane Nicholl born in Wrawby Parish, Lincolnshire, England, in 1605 as the wife of Matthew Moulthrop, Sr., one of the original settlers of the New Haven Colony.1  Historical records further indicate that she was the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy George (or possibly Gage) Nicholl and that she married Matthew Mowthrop (i.e., Moulthrop) in Wrawby Parish on May 13, 1633.  In passing, it is significant that this locality lies only about thirty miles northeast of the village of Scrooby in Nottinghamshire where many of the "Pilgrim Fathers" originated, later to make the first settlement at Plymouth in 1620.  Although, there is no evidence of any direct connection between the Nicholl or Moulthrop families and the Plymouth colonists, the proximity is indicative of a general religious fervor and growth of the Puritan movement in England of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Jane Nicholl Moulthrop accompanied her husband and family to America in 1638, where she lived until May 13, 1672, and presumably died in East Haven Township.  Her estate was probated later the same year and an abstract of her will has been published in the New England Genealogical and Historical Register.  In addition, Jane's sister, Ellen Nicholl Luddington, also settled with her husband in the New Haven Colony.
