Biographical Details:

Mariah Hendrickson was the daughter of Peter and Sarah Osborn Hendrickson and according to her tombstone, was born in 1823.  Indeed, this chronology seems plausible since extant marrige records from Warren County, Ohio, indicate that her parents married in December of 1822.  Even so, the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Fulton County, Indiana, indicated that "Maria" Potts was born in June of 1816.  Within this context, Fulton County census records of 1860, 1870, and 1880 are consistent with her birth in 1823, but the corresponding population schedule of 1850 implies that she was born ten years earlier, i.e., in 1813 or 1814.  Even so, it is probable that discrepancies in 1850 and 1900 census records can be explained as simple clerical errors and, therefore, can be regarded as inconsequential.  Within this context, it seems that Mariah's mother may have died when she was an infant or young child, but this remains to be definitively proven.  Nevertheless, her father seems to have remarried and with his older brother, Abraham, relocated to Clinton County, Indiana, about 1830.  Concomitantly, Mariah does not seem to have lived with her father and putative step-mother and evidently remained behind in Ohio probably living with relatives, perhaps, her grandparents.  Accordingly, it would seem evident that George Potts was substantially older that his bride when they married about 1840 probably in either Butler or Warren County, Ohio.  Afterward, they migrated to Fulton County, Indiana, where she remained until her death in 1906.  Mariah Hendrickson Potts was buried with her husband in Shaffer Cemetery near the town of Kewanna.
