My research clusters around two general areas. The first concerns decision processes, negotiation and consensus-building, the integration of different forms of knowledge, and the roles and responsibilities of the participants, including professional planners and facilitators. The second area is substantively grounded in environmental policy and planning.

CURRENT RESEARCH::

Factors Affecting Choice of Methods for Integrating Information into Public Decision Making Processes

The goal of this project is to identify factors that affect the selection of alternative methods for handling information in controversial collaborative public decision making. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with participants in environmental decision making cases in Oregon.

Management of Urban Riparian Corridors, 1990-2002.

Working with Professor Alan Yeakley in Environmental Sciences and Resources, we are investigating the effectiveness of different management approaches in protecting riparian vegetation in urbanizing areas. Our research focuses on the change in vegetative cover from 1990-2002, in three Oregon cities: Hillsboro, Oregon City and Portland.
