If you want to bring data from an SDA web site, such as GSS data from the UC Berkeley SDA web site, into SPSS, start by reading the tutorial, "SDA_data_to_SPSS.pdf". This tutorial was kindly prepared by one of my students, Joel Donaldson.
This tutorial is in the "Data" folder:
However, expect that even after reading the tutorial you may still need some help. I would be happy to help you. After you have read Joel's tutorial, then you might give the conversion a try. If you do have aproblem (which you might) I could probably talk you through it on the phone or we could do the conversion in person.
A common place to err is at the place that you indicate what is the existing data file. You must specify the full path necessary to find the file.
Note that you need to use the full version of SPSS, not Student SPSS, to create the new file from the SDA data. Student SPSS does not support SPSS syntax files, which are used in this conversion.
If you want me to help you to create an SPSS file from SDA data, please prepare a list of variable names that you want, which we can then copy and paste when downloading the data. Also think about the year(s) for which you want the data.
