In the last 50 years, the production of soy has grown tenfold, from 27 to 269 million tonnes. The total area of soy now covers over 1 million killometers squared - the total combined area of France, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Soybean imports to Asia are expected to grow from approximately 75 million metric tonnes in 2009 to 130 million metric tonnes in 2019.
In 2016 97% of the world’s soybean crop was fed to livestock on farms, meaning humans consumed less than 3% as food.
