Johannes Keppler (1571-1630)

The harmonic law is the most valuable part of Keppler's Harmony of the Worlds. Most of the book deals with Keppler's theories on the harmony of the planets; he even derives notes of music they play as they move harmoniously in their orbits. The earth, for example, plays the notes mi, fa, mi, which he took to symbolize the "miseria (misery), fames (famine), miseria" of our planet.

Course Description: Provides a thorough ground-work in the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of music with written exercises and analysis based on the styles of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and other 17th and 18th century composers. Registration in the appropriate Sight-Singing/Ear Training course is required. An entrance placement examination will be given. Basic Keyboard Skills is recommended for music majors and minors.

Materials and Resources: Students should provide pencils/pens, 3-ring binder, notebook, and manuscript paper. An email account and Internet access are strongly recommended. Course Content and Grading: Attendance is critical, and will be taken but not graded. 25% of grade will be based on each of three tests, two during the term and a final. Make up exams will only be given in the case of excused absence and advance notification. The additional 25% will be based on 7-10 assignments. Assignments turned in late will be given no points, but two assignments may be missed without penalty.
