Introduction |
On Sunday August 27, 2006 I drove home from Lewiston, ID with Enzo, my new dog. Since then, each day has been a mini adventure, often ending with a few calls and e-mails to/from family and friends checking on his progress. So, I decided to join the blogging world and share the experience on this webpage.

Background |
I had been checking the petfinder.com website, along with a few other shelter and rescue group pages, a few times a day, looking for a standard poodle to adopt. One day there were two young male poodles (brothers Robo and Biggy), available for adoption through Helping Hands Rescue in Lewiston, ID. I checked the map and found that Lewiston was about 350 miles east of here, near where Idaho, Washington, and Oregon all meet. I haven't been to that part of the Northwest yet, but had been meaning to, so I thought it might be a good road trip. I contacted the rescue group , filled out their application, passed the home visit test, and planned a weekend trip to Lewiston.
Robo's history |
The description of Robo and Biggy on the website indicated that they were purebred neutered male standard poodles who were 1-3/4 years old (born Nov. 2004). They weighed approx. 45 lbs and got along well with other dogs. Biggy and his brother, Robo were adopted by some people who abused them. So, now, they are initially shy with people, but once they have learned they can trust you, they are extremely loveable! When I met both dogs at a park in Lewiston it was clear that this description was accurate. They were shy, but you could tell they would be lovable. Their original owner had been taking care of them for about six months, nursing them back from the terrible situation they had been in. After asking several questions, I decided to take Robo home with me. |

Robo becomes Enzo |
I thought Robo needed a new name for his new life. Murphy had been named after Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, CA, where I grew up watching the San Diego Padres play baseball. I stuck with that theme and renamed Robo after my favorite player when I was a kid, #11 shortstop Enzo Hernandez. He played from 1971-1976. I thought the switch from Robo to Enzo would be relatively easy.
August 27, 2006 The ride home |
There he is! The ride home was relatively uneventful, though Enzo was clearly scared and unsure about what was going on. His defense mechanism was to just stand still. He didn't want to eat a treat or drink water. In anticipation of his future social life in Portland, we stopped at a brew pub in Waitsburg, WA with outdoor seating. Enzo just stood the whole time. We got home about 9 pm that night. He was reluctant to go in the door to the house, and I had to carry him in. His tail seemed permanently glued down and head was often down as well. He was very shy and nervous, but eventually fell asleep in the living room. |

Monday August 28, 2006 |
Our first full day at Enzo's new home. We took a couple walks to the park and several walks around the yard. With each walk he got better on the leash, a little more confident, head a little more up, but tail still down. Still not eating or drinking much, but some. I got a book by Deborah Wood, Help for Your Shy Dog, Turning Your Terrified Dog into a Terrific Pet. The title seemed to fit our situation perfectly. He seemed terrified a lot of the time. Everything was new to him. I just yanked him out of his home with his brother, parents, and other poodle friends. But, there were little signs of improvement. With each trip out, he got better going back in through the door. He seemed to relax a bit more on our walks, sniffing more.
Tuesday August 29, 2006 | This morning Enzo woke me up very early with a noise I was afraid meant an accident in the house. It didn't, but I took him outside to "take care of business." I went back to bed and an hour or so later he wandered into my bedroom, found his bed, and slept in it. Prior to that he had just been in the living room. Then about an hour later he woke up, came to my bed and put his chin up next to me, waiting to be petted. Major progress! Up to this time he had enjoyed being petted, but didn't search me out to be petted. Still no tail wagging, but this gesture made me very happy. We took a trip to Green Dog to find Enzo a new collar. He was shy, but did okay. He's eating and drinking more, but still very hesitant about most things and not responsive to bribes with a treat yet. When I went out for a couple hours he barked when I opened the door, a bark that indicated that he was protecting his new home (at least that's my optimistic interpretation!)
Wednesday August 30, 2006 | Once again Enzo started sleeping in the living room last night, but eventually wandered to his bed in my bedroom. And, he woke me up again asking to be petted. This time I caught a glimpse of his tail wagging for the first time. Yeah! He seemed excited to start a new day. A few minutes ago I heard him playing with a squeeky toy for the first time. The tail's still down when we're out walking, but his head's up and he's clearly more interested in observing what's going on. Evening update: We took our first long walk today, to the Beaumont Village area on Fremont, about 3 miles round trip. He did well, except when we passed by a construction site and the nail gun went off. He got spooked and was pretty skittish for the rest of the walk. I tried taking more pictures of him, but it's hard. He rarely will look at the camera. But, here's one of his new collar. |

Thursday August 31, 2006 | Enzo and I just got back from visiting some friends in Vancouver, WA who live near a great off-leash dog park . Enzo first got to meet Charlie (a setter) and Lilly (a spaniel puppy) along with humans Jeanne and Barry. Then we walked to the park. He did great. He met several dogs of all sizes and looked like he was enjoying wandering around the park. He was shy, but receptive to the dogs and people. There were a couple other black standard poodles that really wanted to play with him. He wasn't quite ready for that, but given a little more time I think he will be. He was good at coming when called. It's only our fifth day together and with his new name, so I think that's great progress. He does not like the car. I have to pick him up and put him in. But, hopefully after we go in the car more times to fun places like the dog park, he'll get used to it. He also seems to hesitate going through gates and doors. And his tail is wagging more! |

Friday Sept. 1, 2006 |
No big events to report today. Last night when I got home from grocery shopping, Enzo was quite excited, running around and acting playful. This was the biggest reception I have gotten. He's like this a little in the mornings, too, when we first get up. It's almost as if he's forgotten that he's scared of the world after being asleep, wakes up with a carefree attitude, then after a little while remembers, "oh, I forgot, I'm scared of stuff." Today when I came home from work he was also excited, but then wouldn't come with me outside to pick vegetables. I think he has a particular aversion to the back door, which has a wood screen door on it. This morning he didn't want to go back in that way and kept going to the front door. I didn't want to let him get away with that and after a few tries, major encouragement, and waiting, he eventually came through. Despite these little things he's scared of, he's definitely feeling at home, eating and drinking pretty normally. Tomorrow we go to the vet to have his stitches removed (from neutering) and checked out overall. We walked there the other day to make the appointment and probably will tomorrow. That way the vet won't be initially associated with the car, which he doesn't like.
Saturday Sept. 2, 2006 | Today is a day of ups and downs with Enzo. The major events of the day included lunch at the Rogue Brewpub (outside seating) and a vet appointment. Here are the ups:

Random Stuff | I had not realized that "Enzo" is also a model of a Ferrari, named after the founder, Enzo Ferrari. So far, my Enzo bears little resemblance to the Enzo Ferrari. According to wikipedia, "Eric Clapton , guitarist , took delivery of the first Enzo imported to the UK. Parisian police also stopped Clapton when he was reportedly doing 145 mph on a highway in Paris while driving his Enzo." Paul Allen, Microsoft co-founder, also owns one. He also owns the Portland Trailblazers, so there's a connection. There are also Enzo shoes, one of which is pictured at the right. There's another dog named Enzo that shared the role of Skip in My Dog Skip and portrayed Eddie in Frasier after his father, Moose, retired. There seem to be several restaurants named Enzo, and a cartoon, Enzo and PoPo. It's hard to tell, but I think that Enzo might be a dog (right). Again, no resemblance to my Enzo. There are a bunch of Italian men named Enzo, including a film director, musicians, artists, a writer, and others. Apparently there's also a gorilla named Enzo at the Kolmarden Zoo in Sweden. I think that's him at the right, but since I don't speak Swedish, I may have misunderstood the website. I think that's enough googling for now. |
