Week One (2026-3-30 and 2026-4-1)

This week, we will cover Sections 9.1 to 9.4.

Week Two (2026-4-6 and 2026-4-8)

This week, we will cover Sections 9.5 and 9.6.
HW1 is due on 2026-4-8: 9.1*, 9.2, 9.5, 9.6^†, 9.7.

Week Three (2026-4-13 and 2026-4-15)

This week, we will cover Sections 9.7 and the start of 9.8.
HW2 is due on 2026-4-15: 9.12*, 9.13, 9.15, (9.14, but you may assume the first sentence of part (a) is true without proving it)^†.

Week Four (2026-4-20 and 2026-4-22)

This week, we will cover finish Section 9.8 and start Section 9.9.
HW3 is due on 2026-4-22: 9.19, 9.21.

Week Five (2026-4-27 and 2026-4-29)

This week, we will cover Sections 9.9 and 9.10.
HW4 is due on 2026-4-29: 9.18*, 9.20, 9.22, 9.23^† (hint: suppose K is a field and σ is a field automorphism of K; can you prove that the function σ*:K[X]→K[X], defined by acting on the coefficients of polynomials via σ, is a ring automorphism of K[X]?).

Week Six (2026-5-4 and 2026-5-6)

The midterm is on 2026-5-6 (covering Sections 9.1–9.10), and we'll review on 2026-5-4.
In advance, look at Exercise 9.25.

Week Seven (2026-5-11 and 2026-5-13)

This week, we will cover Sections 9.11 and 9.12.
HW5 is due on 2026-5-13: 9.24 and 9.26.

Week Eight (2026-5-18 and 2026-5-20)

This week, we will finish Section 9.12 and begin 9.13.
HW6 is due on 2026-5-20: 9.31*, 9.32, and 9.33^†.

Week Nine (2026-5-27)

There was no class this week because Derek was sick.

Week Ten (2026-6-1 and 2026-6-3)

This week, we will talk a little bit about solvability of polynomials by radicals (Section 9.15), and we will review for the final.
HW7 is due on 2026-6-1: 9.34.
To review for the final, take a look at HW8 (not for turning in).

Finals Week

The Final Exam is scheduled for Monday 2026-6-8, at 5:45pm–7:35pm, in our regular classroom. It will cover Sections 9.1–9.13, as well as HW8.
