Week 7: rubrics; testing writing; postponed: teaching & testing listening, reading

(5') Review of previous meeting:

(10') implications of proficiency assessment: a literary interpretation scale (0278), presumably for speaking as well as writing; Donato article (0104) about how much language use / learning happen in upper-level literature classes; follow-up reading for later implementation: Liskin-Gasparro (a giant in our field!) "Teaching for Writing Proficiency: Principles and Approaches" (0124)

(10') adapting proficiency testing to the classroom: what about weighting the grades on oral / writing tests (each test; aggregate as percentage of grade for entire course)? What about other skills / knowledge as percentages of the grade? The vexed issues of progress, effort, attendance and participation.

+

(15') rubrics beyond evaluating individual language performance: multiskill/ multi-person activities (projects, teamwork); GER 102 Project 1 (Einkaufen und Geschenke; also work samples 0777a • 0777b • 0777c • 0777d • 0777e • 0777f); 0908 group project scoring guide

+

(05') new: assignment 4 (create a scoring guide); Assignment 2 (rate own proficiency) is OVERDUE, and it is an important foundation for your pseudo-OPI; this year we will NOT be doing the assignment about experiencing and analyzing an on-line language test

(10') introduction to state standards (see reading assignment on "schedule" page) - quick look at the second language standards (0698); the timeline / pipeline for reform / innovation in education (0254, 0317)

(10') (if time) a contentious topic: ranges in difficulty of languages; time needed to learn a language to whatever level - and can it be shortened? 0157 DLI 1973 chart; 0786 Clifford, Ray, "What Does it Mean to Learn a Language?" (TLE October 2008)
