INQUIRY AND CRITICAL THINKING
We have learned to do library and electronic (Internet) research, and how to read a book, article, drawing, graph, or map critically. We also learned how to find out both sides of an issue and how to decide for ourselves what we think about it.
Library Tour: Through a guided tour and instruction the class was informed of the best research methods, and the resources available to attain a quality base of information relating to our topics of study. These tours and tutoring by librarians continued throughout the year as different projects required additional processes.
Change The World Research: In our search to better the society, we sought out a topic of interest, and discovered the issues surrounding a resolvable conflict. Based on this research, a stance was taken to develop a plan of action.
Literature Read: Works were selected from several genres, time spans, and global regions to grasp the wide spread idea of community.
Fall Term: Guests of the Sheik, First Fieldwork: Misadventures of an Anthropologist, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Constitution of the United States of America, Homo Necans
Winter Term: A Journal of the Plague Year, Survival in Auschwitz, We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families
Spring Term: The Public and the Private, Rooted in the Land: Essays on Community and Place, Better Together: Restoring the American Community.
Graphing: We were able to express ourselves through mediums other than writing. Tables, graphs, and presentations, were utilized to illustrate various information.
Academic Home Page: We also expanded our technological prowess in our design of online portfolios. Instruction was given on Microsoft FrontPage, PhotoShop, and other applicable programs.
Community debates: We were placed out of our comfort zones on several occasions during planned debates. We researched questions, and were arbitrarily assigned one side of the issue to support. This was a great lesson in thinking on the spot, and really opened us up socially.
