Biographical Details:
Obviously, as an oldest son, Francis Marion Welch, Jr., was named after his father and, similarly, was known familiarly as "Frank". Moreover, he was the first of the children of Francis Marion, Sr., and Mary Ella Wheeler Welch to be born in Gentry County, Missouri. Francis M. Welch and Mary Frances Newman were married in the fall of 1888. (Her younger sister, Elizabeth, married Frank's younger brother, William, in 1894.)1 Subsequently, Frank and Frances Welch had five known children, viz., Chester, John, Bessie, Jane, and Vinnie. Moreover, after their marriage they settled in Athens Township several miles southeast of the town of Albany and apparently remained resident in this vicinity for the remainder of their lives.2 Indeed, according to a published obituary of F. M. Welch, the couple first settled on a farm later owned by Jake Newman.3 Civil records indicate that this was located about three miles directly east of the village of Evona. However, after a year of marriage it seems that they moved about a mile further east where they remained for almost fifty-two years. Accordingly, published real estate records of 1930 indicate that F. Welch owned one hundred and twenty acres in the center of Section Three in Township Sixty-two of Range Thirty and an additional one hundred and twenty acres about a mile north in Section Thirty-four; however, the location of the Welch family residence, described as being seven miles southeast of Albany, implies that they resided on more southerly parcel. Francis Marion Welch, Jr., died suddenly on the morning of June 6, 1941. He was apparently trying to remain active on the farm, although his health was poor. As such, this would have been very much in character for men of his time and background. His widow survived until 1957 and both of them were buried in the Grandview Cemetery at Albany.Source Notes and Citations:

"Jacob Newman, known in Gentry County as an excellent citizen and a successful farmer, has his home on his farm of 471 acres of well improved land in Township 62 N., Range 30 W. He was born in Gentry County, May 24, 1866, the son of Alexander and Jane (Thompson) Newman, both dead.
A. Newman was born in Tennessee and came to Gentry County with his mother. He entered 80 acres of land two miles from Albany, and later he and his uncle, Jacob Newman, entered 160 acres each. Both this uncle and Mr. Newman's mother died in Gentry County. Mr. Newman bought and improved other farms during the 55 years which he spent in the county. He died in 1909 at the age of 84 years and his remains are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. To his union with Jane (Thompson) Newman the following children were born: John, a resident of Albany; Mitchell, living at Albany; James, deceased; Robert, living at Albany; Jacob, the subject of this sketch; Frances, now the wife of Frank Welch of Gentry County; and Lizzie, married to W. Welch of Albany. Jacob Newman attended his first school in the Quigley District. The teacher that year was Fred Hinton. Later Mr. Newman went to the Fore District school. He has followed the occupation of farming all of his life and has achieved success in his work. In connection with farming, Mr. Newman has engaged in stock raising with a marked degree of prosperity.
In 1890 Jacob Newman was married to Mary E. Shull a daughter of Joshua and Cozbie (Gillespie) Shull, both deceased. Mr. Shull was born in Ohio, later went to Illinois, and came to Gentry County in early manhood and settled on a farm southeast of Albany. He died on his farm in 1901 and his remains are buried in the Davidson Cemetary. His wife was born in Tazewell County, Va., and came to Missouri with her parents. She died in 1870 and her remains are buried in the Davidson Cemetery. To the union of Joshua and Cozbie (Gillespie) Shull the following children were born: Thomas, living at Albany; Joseph, living at Ellinsburg, Wash.; Martha, deceased, was the wife of Perry Maupin and left two children, Thelma and Thomas; and Mary E., born at Albany, Feb. 5, 1868, now Mrs. Newman.
Mr. and Mrs. Newman have two children : Bertlia, married Woodson Hunter, Aug. 8, 1915, and has three children, Helen, Gladys, and Russell; and Buford, married Grace McConkey, Dec. 29, 1920, and is now living on the home place. Buford Newman is one of the young men to whom the county is proud to give special praise because of the service which they rendered during the World War. Mr. Newman enlisted for service at Albany, Sept. 14, 1918, and was sent to the Rahe Auto School at Kansas City, Mo. Later he was sent to Camp Jessup, Ga., then to Camp Merritt, N. Y., and sailed for France, Oct. 28, 1918, with the 310th Motor Transport. He was stationed first at Dijon and at Coblenz with the Army of Occupation. He was overseas until Sept. 10, 1919, and was mustered out of service at Camp Taylor, Ky., Sept. 23, 1919. Mr. Newman is a member of the Donald Holden Post No. 106 of the American Legion at Albany, and of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons at the same place.
Jacob Newman is a Democrat. He is a man of high ideals, a farmer of efficiency and energy, and a citizen of excellent repute in the county."

back to bio.3. "F. M. Welch, 74, Died of Heart Attack Funeral services for F. M. Welch, native Gentry countian, were conducted by Rev. Bert Christian, assisted by Rev. Vincent Gray, at the Presbyterian church here Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the following obituary was read at the last rites:
Francis Marion Welch, oldest son of Francis Marion and Mary Ellen (sic - Ella) Welch, was born at the old Welch homestead two miles west of Albany July 17, 1866, and died at his home 7 miles southeast of Albany June 6, 1941, being 74 years, 10 months, and 20 days of age.
He was married October 4, 1888, to Miss Mary Frances Newman and they began housekeeping on the farm now owned by Jake Newman, where they lived for a year, and then they moved to the present home where they have lived for about 52 years.
They were the parents of five children, Chester and John, who live near the home, Mrs. Bessie Pool and Mrs. Beatrice Blodgett, both of St. Joseph, and Mrs. Janie Greenlee, who passed away last September. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, one brother, J. W. Welch, who has been staying with Mr. and Mrs. Welch for several weeks. Two brothers, Grant and George Welch, and three sisters, Mrs. Sallie Yale, Mrs. Ella Evans and Mrs. Ollie Hall, have preceded him in death.
Mr. Welch had been in a very serious condition for several months suffering from a heart ailment, but for the past few weeks, he had been able to be up and tried to help with the chores. His death came suddenly early Friday morning while trying to assist with the work.
Mr. Welch was of a very jovial nature and enjoyed nothing more than having his relatives and friends come to his home and visit, as he was a great lover of his home where he an Mrs. Welch have enjoyed almost fifty three years of wedded life.
He was a member of the Presbyterian church at Mt. Zion, he and Mrs. Welch becoming members at the time of the Hobbs and Burke revival several years ago." (obituary: Albany Ledger; Albany, MO, Thur., Jun. 12, 1941.)
