Biographical Details:

The third surviving son of Francis M. and Mary Ella Wheeler Welch was Charles Grant, born April 23, 1871, in Gentry County, Missouri.  He was known throughout his lifetime as "Grant" and, perhaps, was named for General Ulysses S. Grant since his father had been a Union sympathizer during the Civil War and, moreover, this name does not seem to have been applied to anyone else within the extended Welch family.  Grant Welch and Lennie Gillespie were married in Gentry County on March 26, 1896, by Rev. William C. Long, a sabbatarian, viz., Church of God, minister.1  They had two known daughters, Minnie and Ruby.  (Apparently, Ruby later married her first cousin, Ivan Welch, son of George and Edna Moore Welch.)  Census records indicate that Charles G. and Linnie (sic - Lennie) Welch were renting a farm in Huggins Township in 1900.  Subsequently, they seem to have settled with his widowed father on the "homeplace" in Athens Township, where they apparently remained resident for the remainder of their lives.2  Grant Welch died on Christmas Eve in 1940 and his wife followed him a little less than two years later.3,4  They were both buried in Grandview Cemetery.
