Best Practices

Structural Tips

  • Use only one header 1 per page

  • Alternative text (alt text) should describe the purpose of the image

  • Use structural bullet or number lists instead of writing the numbers or letters to ensure that a screen reader user can quickly find the information.

Design Tips

  • All caps font is not used to convey emphasis. All caps will trigger a screen reader to either increase the volume or spell a word out letter by letter which can be confusing for the user

  • Use a sans serif font. The two main types of fonts are serif and sans serif. Common sans serif fonts are Arial and Helvetica

  • If building your own HTML pages, a home button should be present in the same location on every page.
