Spring, 2008

Spring term of 2008 (March 30 - June 14) Michael Toth, Professor of Sociology at Portland State University, will be teaching in London with the Northwest Council Study Abroad (NCSA) program.  He will be offering two courses especially designed to take advantage of the resources of London—England and Great Social Transformations: Precursors of the Present (300 level) and Studies in Charismatic Leadership: Winston Churchill and Adolf Hitler (400 level). In addition to lectures, discussions, and videos, both classes will also include local field trips and longer excursions. Visits will be made to such relevant sites as the House of Commons, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Underground Cabinet War Rooms, the Imperial War Museum, the Battle of Britain Hall at the Royal Air Force Museum, Chartwell, Churchill’s home on the outskirts of London, and Down House, Charles Darwin's country home nearby.

Other courses, offered by British faculty permanently located in London, include 19th and 20th Century English Novels with Susan Thomas, Professor of English Literature; Art and Architecture as a Mirror of Society 1066-1851 and Victorian Art and Architecture with Carole Machin, Professor of Art History; Modern Britain with Andreas Staab, and London Theatre with Vesna Goldsworthy, Professor of Theatre. Each of these courses is designed to take the students out of the classroom into the neighborhoods, museums, theatres, or other cultural opportunities available in this great British metropolis.

PSU/NCSA offers courses all three terms of the 2007-2008 academic year. In addition to the London program, courses are offered at these locations in Europe and South America: Angers, France; Oviedo, Spain; Vienna, Austria; Siena and Macerata, Italy; Athens, Greece; and Valdivia, Chile. With the exception of the Chilean program, which requires a working knowledge of Spanish, all classes are conducted in English. However, most sites provide intensive language learning opportunities as well.

All of the courses offered in this program earn regular Portland State University credit.
