Professor Michael Toth

Michael Toth has been with the Sociology Department at Portland State University since 1991 where he has regularly taught courses in the Foundations of Sociological Thought and the Sociology of Religion.  He has also been a major participant in University Studies, teaching in both Freshman and Sophomore Inquiry.  Prior to coming to PSU, Dr. Toth was Chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Weber State University where he earned recognition as a Distinguished Presidential Professor and an Honors Cortez Professor.  He  has previously taught at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo, Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

While at Weber State Dr. Toth designed and participated in their first study abroad program which was centered in London but also visited parts of England and the Irish Republic.  Since then, he has spent a number of months traveling - and cycling - in England, Ireland, France, and Italy with his wife, Sherwin Davidson, who is a professor of psychology at Portland State.  Professor Toth did his doctoral dissertation on charismatic leadership and has long been interested in the great social transformations which have shaped western society, and increasingly the world.  He is the author of The Theory of the Two Charismas, a study of the ways in which one charismatic leader is often followed by another, as well as numerous articles on various topics in the social sciences.

The two courses he will be offering in the London during spring term of 2008 draw on those enthusiasms, bringing them to life with wide-ranging of discussions, lectures, and media presentations in the classroom combined with  excursions to intriguing sites in the great city of London and the surrounding area.
