Final Exam Information

The final exam for Chemistry 332 will be on Tuesday morning, March 18,
from 8:30 - 10:30 am, in our usual room (SH-212).
The exam will have two parts:
1) a standardized multiple-choice exam from the American Chemical Society,
which will be allotted 90 minutes, and
2) an exam with questions like our typical exams, allotted 30 minutes.
The ACS exam will cover ALL of organic chemistry, but is designed specifically
for students who take the brief organic course. The second part of the exam
will cover just the material of Chem 332.
The 200 points allocated to the final exam for your final course grade
will be divided as follows:
ACS exam: 150 points (normalized - see below)
regular exam: 50 points (percentage scores as usual)
Also keep in mind that e-mail extra credit molecules must be turned
in by the end of that day (Tuesday midnight).
Answers to expected questions:
How do we prepare for a standardized, multiple choice exam, when we've
never done that before?
* Review everything. Conveniently, "A Brief
Review of Nearly Everything" is available. It includes resources
to help you with the review, emphasizing key subjects from our more distant
past.
* All scores will be normalized so that the class average comes out
about the same as the combined averages on the three hour exams. This assures
that the standardized exam does not carry excessively large or small weighting
compared to the other exams. Both percentage correct and percentile ranking
will be used in assigning your score.
* I will be able to tell you how your score compares with the national
percentiles on this exam, which may be useful in reference letters and applications.
(Really, our students have generally done better than the national average
and we like to be able to mention that).
