Pre-Quiz 12 (standard version) - 5 points
You may do either or both the standard or alternate version and get whichever gives you more points.
This alternate assignment is a writing assignment, which is an experimental approach and will take substantially more time than the standard pre-quiz. However, you are certain to gain from this experience a significantly greater depth of understanding, not only in terms of the subject matter of mass spectrometry, but also in writing clearly and reviewing others' writing. The components of the assignment are:
- read the materials related to the assignment
- write an explanatory essay that follows the instructions given
( this must be completed before noon on Tuesday, Jan 18 )- review three sample responses to the assignment to get "calibrated" as an accurate reviewer
- review three responses written by members of our class (anonymously)
- review your own response
( all reviews must be completed before noon on Friday, Jan 21 )- find out how your writing was reviewed by other class members
( available shortly after all reviews are submitted on Friday afternoon, Jan 21 )- grading is based on the quality of your writing, as reviewed by others (50%), your success in getting calibrated as a reviewer (10%), the quality of your reviews of others (30%), and your review of your own writing (10%).
To do the assignment, you will have to log on to the computer
at UCLA that has the materials for the assignment.
Indicate that this is your first time logging in..
Select "Portland State University" from the pull-down
menu.
Use your full 9-digit student ID, including the hyphens, as your
institutional ID, i.e., 123-45-6789 .
You will be given a specific CPR ID ( e.g., n01234 ), which you
will have to remember to reaccess your work.
You will also be given a chance to make up a "challenge question"
in case you forget your CPR ID.
The challenge question is something like "my dog's name is"
- if you can answer that, it will give you your CPR ID.
A student tour of CPR is available. After you log in, you will be given the opportunity to take this tour (or you can go directly now). You will also have to take a simple pre-test (sound familiar?) to check that you understand CPR well enough to get started.
Log in to CPR - results are now available if you log in again.
