Course Description:

Anth 350 is an introduction to the principles of archaeology. We will examine the theory, methods and techniques used by archaeologists to locate and interpret material evidence about past human activities. The format is mainly lecture but we will have time for some class discussion, particularly on legal and ethical issues regarding ownership of the human past. The grading will involve a mix of in-class exams, journal article reviews, and take-home exercises.

I will not be taking attendance, but I strongly urge you to attend each class; arrange to borrow someone's notes if you have to miss class. See me if you have questions about materials you do not understand. We will be covering many issues not addressed in the textbook and you will not do well on the exams and you will have difficulty with the exercises if you do not regularly come to class.

Required Text and Readings:

Thomas, D.H. (1998) Archaeology. Harcourt Brace College Publishers, New York. (3rd edition)

Course Packet: available from Clean Copy

Included here are papers that I will be assigning during the quarter.

Course Requirements/Grading:

4 - take-home exercises and journal article reviews (ea. 25 pts)

2 - In-class exams (ea. 50 pts)

--total 200 points

You will be assigned exercises related to sampling/ research design and stratigraphy/ dating, that you will have about 1 week to complete. You will also write two journal article reviews (one early in the quarter; the second at the end). These will be three page critical reviews and summaries of professional research papers. These assignments MUST BE TURNED IN ON THEIR DUE DATE. I will ONLY accept late assignments if you are seriously ill or have a family emergency. No other excuses. The in-class exams will be a mix of objective (mult.choice) , short answer, and essay questions; the final exam will be cumulative. You will be able to make-up an exam, only if you have a valid reason (medical excuse or family emergency); arrangements need to be made prior to the exam time.

I will give you more information on these assignments and tests in class.
