Oradour sur Glane, France
On June 10, 1944, the German SS rounded up the entire population. The men were shot, the women and children herded into the church which was then torched. The entire town was then razed to the ground. 648 people were killed. Only seven escaped.
The town remains as it was left by the Germans. In the words of Charles de Gualle, “Oradour-sur-Glane is the symbol of the calamities of the country. The memory must be kept alive, for a similar calamity must never occur again.”
