Applying scientific modes of discovery, information gathering and analysis to problems relating to the impact and consequences of the impact on humans and the total (natural and human) environment.
The scientific approach requires:
- objective statements that are independently verifiable
- rigorous and transparent methodologies
- discover new knowledge, not just judgement
There are different modeles for science:
governance of society
distribution of power
decisions over the use of resources
Politics is suited for problem types (simple, CPR)
Science is suited for information problems
politics is necesary for providing resources for environmental problems
if the outcomes have been clarified
science needs to find ways to be independent of the political process yet still influential
