Biological Growth - Fundamental Processes

Biological growth uses external resource to create more biomass

energy resources - such as light or energy in food

material - such as inorganic molecules or bio-molecules in food

resources can be depleted by the growth process

conditions are essentially unchanged by the growth process

When resources are abundant, growth rate is related to the amount of actively growing biomass and an intrinsic growth rate

growth_rate is (new biomass per time) / biomass

such as 5 babies per year per 1000 people

growth_rate * population = increase_in_population

2 conditions that give high population increases
