Benefits of Ambiguity in Regulation

1. diversity generation

2. hinge point

Ambiguous instructions are probably part of a larger control system. To be understood these instructions need to be considered in a larger scale or in the context of the types of information fed to them from smaller scales.

Examples:

individual ---> progeny

multiple dominant and recessive allels

population

helps maintain diversity needed for flexibility and adaptation for survival

intermediate instruction set leads to multiple possible states
