Walk Three - Circumnavigation of Ross Island (on land)

Before you embark:

Write a short statement about why Ross Island should be restored and then established as part of the wildlife and greenspace assets of the City of Portland.

Write down three to five individual observations that you think you would like to make to help you address questions about this project.

During the expedition make notes that relate to these questions. Be as specific as you can.

After the expedition, answer the questions you posed and modify your statement about Ross Island. Reflect on whether your questions turned out to be appropriate.

Start in front of Broadway Building (by entrance near Starbucks)

West end of Ross Island Bridge - bioswale

  all the land under the bridge that will be developed
  gravel operations at east end of bridge
45 min left on path, go to the west of Dairygold, left again and underneath the highway to bikepath, left - heading south
 

observe Ross Island

  go through Oaks Bottom
2 hrs take a stop at Oaks Park (bathrooms and general viewing)
2 hr 10 min at the south end of Oaks Park go up to the Sellwood bridge
  at west end of Sellwood bridge, go right (north) along bike path,
  go along Macadam, take a right on Miles Street (which is right after Gorge Performance), go to the T and take a left
2 hr 30 min hike along the waterfront in Willamette Park
  go by the Willamette Sailing club and take a right along a public access path that goes right along the water
  continue on that path until it ends, go back out to the street and take a right.
  This is the end of the hike at the streeet car stop.
3 hr 10 min Take any of the street car stops back to PSU (or walk).
   
     

 

3. Hints:

On the outbound trip, the first stop was at Oaks Amusement Park. We used the restrooms and observed some local flavor.

Hiking back up the west side of the Willamette, we could have stayed on Macadam for a while longer and stopped for food at some of the restuarants or grocery stores there. Instead we powered on and people stopped for lunch at the Spaghetti Factory or just headed back to PSU.

The hike is much more interesting if you have someone to walk with. It's a long hike. That illustrates the dimensions of this potential city park. When you're back on the west side, looking east across Ross Island, it seems like a long way over there.

You could do this trip on a bike. If you do, you should intentionally stop often to view the smaller features along the trail that you'll miss at bike speed.
