Notes for lecture 3 - April 6

1. Handback assignment and make comments

Just because you got 5 points didn't mean you addressed the question, which was:

How do the green spaces or environment help you learn?

2. Discuss the reading

Speth: Preface, Intro and Chap 1

sequential

For our discussion, I'm going to read the chapters and highlight them and then review that just before class.

Please bring in some ideas from the reading that you thought were important or questions you have.

See the Speth notes section for some points that I think are important. I put page numbers and use quotes for direct passages. If you see <!-- text --> that is a comment line that I put in that is not in the book.

3. World views

self-reinforcing

scenarios

how do you deal with these -- my suggestion is on three levels

  • level 1: educating yourself with multiple approaches, tools and experiences to have a broad understanding
  • level 2: work with range of stakeholders in a community around a defined problem
    • (cooperative and collaborative environment)
  • level 3: when world views collide,
    • real and imagined conflict
    • importance of metaphors, assumptions and cognitive toolbox contents

4. Values

How do we talk about what we value?

held values - deep, unchangeable

considered values - think about and change

Can we judge right and wrong?

Berry's "great work" - very spiritual sounding and value laden

General to specific cases of protecting your pet
