2. Culture vs. experience - report back

short in-class written

Culture is what your left with after you forgot everything you learn.
Passing on culture without specific deatils or experiences.

Is the attempt to pass on a culture of sustainability at odds with Norton's view of SAM and the method of experience?

some points people made:

save places because they are irreplaceable (precautionary principle)

rational decisions are only part of the value

research data is not relevant

sacred and historical sites should be preserved for non-monetary reasons

cultures change, what one culture presesrved for rational reasons is passed to the ncxt generations (and cultures) to appreciate and preserve (legacy argument)

need culture to make values - all evidence is contextual, study how people make value

choosing to save some area can be a statement of a culture's values

the process of saving that area is a shared positive act of a community that can contribute to the development of its culture
