Short Written Assignment #1

This paper is worth 10 points. Please follow the instructions for the expected content, it will be graded by looking for these points. This paper should probably be 5 or 6 paragraphs, just over one page single-spaced.

The problem: Human population growth is a crucial stress on the environment. Richer populations consume more but cleanly, poorer populations may consume less but with more pollution per money spent. Industrialization can be seen as both a source of pollution but also a path for countries to grow economically which leads to stabilization of their populations.

In this short paper you will have to bring together three separate topics, describe how they are related and discuss some potential solution for global sustainability.

1. I=PAT
2. the need to maintain natural capital (including biodiversity)
3. growth and potential stabilization of populations through industrial or economic growth

Describe each and how they are related or are in conflict. You might want to pick just several examples of maintaining natural capital and organize your paper around how the other two relate to that.
