What's the difference between an artisanal farm and an organic farm?

Describe each of the Individualist, Hierachist, and Egalitarian world views.

What does the "myth of nature" have to do with all of this?

What is a "scenario"? Give an example.

What is the method for using these world views and scenarios to address uncertainty in environmental policies.

How does acknowledging a range of values and world views help promote pluralism? How does pluralism help address wicked problems and avoid suprises?

What are the four scenarios developed by the Millenium Ecosystem Assessment? Which of the world-views do these best match.

Text - Chapter 11

From the examples in this chapter, explain how the IHE worldviews view world population growth.

What are some of the conditions and skills needed to use scenarios to create an understanding of uncertainty in environmental decisions?

On-line activities

readings:

Give an example of a small farm that uses organic or artisanal methods for producing food.

Give an example of how urban common areas can produce food.

Why do people really love their chickens in Portland (rhetorical question)?

videos about Polyface farm:

Summarize what Joel Salatin does at Polyface farm.

Why does he call it "polyface"?

Discuss the concept of capturing solar energy that goes straight to food.

Analysis and Synthesis questions:
These are the type of manipulations you should be able to perform; parse out the parts of the question, remember or find concepts that are useful, and then put those together into a coherent answer.

This is a 3 point question on the quiz, so it's worth thinking about.

If you were making a favorable argument for a water project that would provide the city with water, what argument might you make to each type of world view (from the Individualis-Hierachist-Egalitarian spectrum)?

Discuss the mismatch of worldviews and actual conditions. For example, what if you believe in an egalitarian solution and process, but it turns out the situation really demands a hierarchical approach. What might happen? Why is this a good example of dealing with uncertainty.
