Hybrid Course Instructions

ESM 101 is a "hybrid" course which means that there is a face-to-face lecture section and significant on-line assignments that otherwise might have been presented in class. There is also "homework" which includes reading and studying examples.

This course will only meet F2F on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 9:50 in Cramer Hall 150.

During that lecture:

    • introduction to a few concepts
    • explanation on how to apply one or two different perspectives on these problems
    • classroom assessment to see how we are all doing
    • discussion of an environmental issue
    • set the context for the next set of readings

Outside of class, during the week and before Sunday at midnight of each week

    • read the chapters from the text
    • review notes used in lecture, work through the assignments that could be videos, simulations, etc
    • complete the concept quiz before Friday midnight on D2L
    • complete the "crux" on-line assignment in D2L before Sunday at midnight

The D2L modules are arranged in the order that you should do the assignments.

The lab-section is required and is worth 1/4 of your total grade. Please see D2L for your section information.

My suggestion - go to every lecture and set a schedule for yourself when you will do the assignments so that you don't forget. Don't leave the assignments until Friday or Sunday at 11 PM, because it will take you more time than that. I think you'll actually learn more if you work on the course some on multiple days, rather than all in one pulse.

Here's an example calendar:

Tue attend lecture 8:30 to 9:50
lecture presenation and discussion
Tue or Wed review your lecture notes and do the assignments
Wed and Thur attend your lab section
Thur or Friday

study the learning objectives and then take the concept quiz

Thur or Fri answer the crux question early while the concepts are fresh in your head
Sat & Sun

get outside and observe some of the issues we are learning about in lecture and lab

Mon check the schedule for the week and prepare by reading some of the notes or readings
