Simulations in EXCEL

These simulations are designed to look at several very important processes in algal physiology, growth and competition. They are based on a self-consistent set of parameters for algal cells and growth that would be beyond the scope of this course to derive.

Each simulation will have a that guides you through creating the spreadsheet. It is important that you learn how to construct a speadsheet with charts. There will also be a copy of the spreadsheet for downloading, which will be more efficient as the simulations get more complex.

The simulations link to the following major concepts

major concept link description of EXCEL simulation
survival
growth simulation1 exponential and logistic growth
photosynthesis simulation2

light dependent and independent steps modeled in series
rate vs. light for different compositions of the photosynthetic machinery (Pmemb vs Penz)

balance of flow through metabolism simulation3 adjust the content of the Pmemb, Penz, EnzBiosynth and Nassim components of the cell to determine a maximum growth rate for a given set of different light and nitrate concentrations

regulation strategies

simulation4

simulation 4b

investment strategies

set up so that you can look at switches from high to low and vise verse

competition

simulation5

how mortality is important in relationship to the u vs. [R] relationship

two species competing for a single resource with different uptake kinetics and mortality rates
