Spring 2018
Portland State University
FINAL EXAM GUIDELINES
Tuesday, June 12, 10:15-12:05
320
points (32% of final grade)
Guidelines - please read carefully
- Please bring
one or two blue/green books (or however many you think you may need) to the
exam. Blue/green books will be collected before the start of the exam and
redistributed to students. They may be purchased at the student store in
Smith Center or the PSU Bookstore.
- Students
may use their notebook/journal, which they have maintained during
the quarter, during the exam. However, no other books, laptops, or personal
devices will be permitted during the exam. Students using any personal
data device at any time
will be asked to hand in their exam immediately and will receive an automatic
'0'. Students needing to use the restroom are asked to turn over their electronic
devices before leaving the room.
- The exam will be scored on a scale of 250
points, using the following grade range: 250-225 - A; 224-200 - B; 199-175
- C; 174-150 - D; 149 and below - F. Partial credit will be awarded all
completed exam answers.
Exam format
- The exam will be comprehensive;
that is, it will cover all the course material presented this term.
- The exam will consist
of four questions, from which students will choose 2 to answer during the
exam period. Each question will be multi-part.
- Each answer will be
expected to make use of a minimum
of 5 primary sources from the term; primary sources are those readings
deriving from the historical period itself (thus, More, Erasmus, Diaz, etc.).
The textbook and other secondary readings may certainly be referenced and
employed, but they may not count toward the primary source minimum.
- Answers should present
and argue a thesis and utilize
the sources as evidence, much as in an analytical essay. Because this an
open-note exam, considerable weight will be attached to the exam's arguments
and use of sources.
