Class Notes: (please note
that the sets that say "Instructor Notes" are incomplete, as they only
have text from the lecture slides. Many of my slides have little
or no text, so if you rely on my notes, you'll be missing a great deal
of information. I will also be posting the student notes here as
well.
Topic 1: Introduction
to solar system
Topic 2: Light and the
Spectrum and Stellar Lifecycles
Topic 3: Formation
and Evolution of the Solar System
Topic 4: Habitable Planets
Topic 5: Exoplanets
Topic 6: Origin and Evolution
of Life (this was a lab, but I'm putting up my lecture notes as well to
help clarify the student presentations)
Topic 7: Mars - Student Presentations
-
Student
notes - rocks - note that the surface of Mars is covered with basalt
as far as we know--the statement about andesite is incorrect
-
Student
notes - water - note that the presentation has mixed up outflow channels
(which start at chaotic terrain and represent catasrophic floods) with
valley networks (which are dendritic channels that appear to have formed
at a time when rain fell on Mars). Gullies (which are very small features)
have recently been attributed to carbon dioxide frost, not water.
-
Student
notes - ice
-
Student
notes - Viking biology experiments
Topic 8: Satellites of Jupiter
and Saturn
Topic 9: SETI
