Required Texts: Tonal Harmony, and Workbook for Total Harmony by Stefan Kostka and Dorothy Payne ©2004 by McGraw Hill. Book's website is here.
Course Description: Provides a thorough ground-work in the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of music with written exercises and analysis based on the styles of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and other 17th and 18th century composers. Registration in the appropriate Sight-Singing/Ear Training course is required. An entrance placement examination will be given. Basic Keyboard Skills is recommended for music majors and minors.
Materials and Resources: Students should provide pencils/pens, 3-ring binder, notebook, and manuscript paper. An email account and Internet access are strongly recommended. The Midi Lab (LH209) is available to Music Theory students and a tutorial on Finale, Sibelius, Practica Musica, or other educational software may be arranged.
Course Content and Grading: 75% of grade will be based on scores on four tests, three during the term and a final. Make up exams will only be given in the case of excused absence and advance notification. The additional 25% will be based on 8-9 assignments, attendance, and participation in class discussion. Assignments will be graded on a 1-5 point system, with 5 point the best score. Assignments turned in late will not be edited or given points, but one assignment may be missed without penalty.
Special Considerations: Students with documented disabilities will be accommodated. Please discuss with instructor during the first week of the term.
