GTEP Requirements

What is GTEP?

GTEP stands for Graduate Teacher Education Program. This is the program that students must complete to become certified to teach in the public schools of Oregon after they have gotten an undergraduate degree (BS, BA or BM). It is a 4 term program which begins either in the late summer (end of July) or the spring. You must apply and be accepted. Currently, 100% of program graduates find jobs.

What do I do as an undergraduate?

What is a Practicum?

A Practicum is simply time spent observing in a classroom. Practicums are taken along with these specific classes:

Required Practicum Classes

In Oregon, grade levels are set up into "authorization levels:"
Early Childhood age 3 to grade 4
Elementary grade 3 to grade 8
Middle grade 5 to grade 10
High grade 7 to grade 12

Currently, teachers can become certified to teach in two adjacent "authorization levels." For example if you taught elementary school, you would be certified in Early Childhood and Elementary, and would be certified to teach age 3 (preschool) to grade 8. Music teachers become certified in K-12 through the PSU program. We have worked out with the certification office that music students will complete practicums in 3 "authorization levels", and student teach in the fourth "authorization level." You will want to decide which "authorization level" you would like to do your student teaching in, and do your practicums in the other 3 areas.
