Ch 14 Advanced Spatial Analysis (Core of GIS I)

Ch 15 Uncertainty, Error, and Sensitivity

To be deemphasized:

Ch 4 Georeferencing (covered by GEOG 380, but won’t hurt to give a brief review)

Ch 8 GIS Software (but the client-server architecture is worth introducing)

Ch 10 GIS Data Collection

Ch 12 Visualization and User Interaction (covered by GEOG 380)

Ch 16-19 Practice (Deemphasize the whole section)

GIS Lab Recommendations

• Let students learn geocoding toward the beginning of the term.
• Move spatial analyst exercise to as early as the 7^th week of the term.
• If you use Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop (2^nd Edition), you may consider the followings:
• dropping out Chapter 7 (Labeling features), Chapters 18 (Making maps from templates) and 19 (Making maps for presentation) or maybe incorporating these topics in other labs.
• Chapters 8 (Querying data), 9 (Joining and relating tables), and 10 (Selecting features by location) may go together in one lab.
• Could introduce Geodatabase (Section 6) and spatial analyst in the labs.

GIS Graduate Certificate Information

• Guideline for Waiving GIS I: A student may request a waiver of GIS I if he/she has taken a course equivalent to GIS I at the university level and he/she has recent and substantial professional experience in applying GIS. The student should provide a course syllabus from his/her original GIS course summarizing the topics covered by the course and a reference letter from a recent employer highlighting the GIS tasks he/she has accomplished. In no event may courses taken seven years prior to the award of the certificate be used to waive the GIS-I course. If the GIS I course is waived, the student is required to take an additional elective course to fulfill the required twenty (20) credits in the program.
• An undergraduate who is interested in pursuing a GIS Graduate Certificate Program after graduation should enroll into GIS I at the graduate level (i.e., GEOG 588) and reserve the course so that it won’t be used to fulfill his/her undergraduate degree requirements. Please refer to the GO-10 form for details.
