Lab 2: Symbology and Classification

Introduction

This lab introduces symbolization of features and rasters in ArcGIS.  It  also introduces classification of features and rasters.  You will learn the following skills in ArcView:

Do the tutorial exercises in Chapters 5 and 6 of Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop.

Deliverables

Answer the following questions and produce the following outputs.  Hand them in to the instructor at the beginning of the next lab section.  Labs should be typed, include your name and lab number, be well organized, and staples together.

Chapter 5

  1. What does the unique value option do in categorical symbolization?
  2. At the end of section 5b make sure you are in the Layout View.  Click Insert, Text and then type the enter key. Double click on the small text box.  Type your name and then choose the change symbol button.  Change the font soze to 36.     Click OK twice.  Click File, Page Setup and change the page size to letter and the page orientation to landscape and then click OK.  Choose File, Print and hand in the map.
  3. If you make a layer (lyr) file from a shape file after symbolizing it, why must you include the original shapefile in you want to give it to a friend?
  4. Use the textbox functions to type your name on the map at the end of section 5c, which includes the wildlife map, and print it.
  5. Use the textbox functions to type your name on the map at the end of section 5d and print it.

Chapter 6

  1. Explain graduated color, graduated symbol, proportional symbol, and dot density maps including the types of features that each can be used to display.
  2. Explain the six ArcGIS classification methods.
  3. Explain what a histogram displays by using an example of population in African countries using the natural breaks method.  Be sure to describe what the X and Y axes mean.
  4. What are the Break Values for the Africa 2000 population values with 3 quantile classes?
  5. Use the textbox functions to type your name on the map at the end of section 6a and print it as a letter size document.
  6. Use the textbox functions to type your name on the map at the end of section 6b and print it as a letter size document.
  7. What is normalization?
  8. Use the textbox functions to type your name on the map at the end of section 6c and print it as a letter size document.
  9. What type of data do chart maps display?
  10. At the end of section 6d double click on the title "Africa Atlas" and change the text to your name.  Print it as a letter size document.  Don't use the rescaled one.
