Notes

     Maya Angelou has written several best-selling books, as well as several collections of poetry. On January 20, 1993 she read one of her poems, "On the Pulse of the Morning," at the inauguration of President Clinton. In theater, she has produced, directed, and starred in several plays. In film and television, she wrote the original screenplay and musical score for the film Georgia, Georgia and wrote and produced a ten-part TV series on African traditions in American life. She was a major figure in the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. She has received numerous honorary degrees, and received special appointments from President Carter and President Ford. Most recently, she has written television screenplays, and written and hosted television documentaries. Angelou is currently Reynolds Professor at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
