Open-Book Paragraph/Short Essay Answers
(60 points total--15 each)

Directions: Answer each of the four questions below as completely as you can in one or more paragraphs. Be sure to use evidence or information from the readings to support your answers. You may use the textbook if you wish. (45 minutes)


1. In Unit 2A (Zinsser), the fourth paragraph is also part of the introduction to this essay. Why is this an important part of the introduction?


2. In Unit 2D (Holt), the author criticizes the American education system. Do you think the author is biased against it? Why or why not?


3. What kind of upbringing do you think Goodman would approve of? Explain. Be sure to refer to evidence from the reading to draw your inferences.


4. Briefly describe Boyer's suggestions regarding the following: 1) the role of language at a university, 2) the curriculum and what should be in it, 3) teachers' roles in a university, and 4) the purpose of a university. Which of these do you think is the most important? Explain why.
