Bonaire! It's only 50 miles north of Venezuela, but seems a world away. Kralendijk is the capital, but hardly qualifies as a town -- the entire island only has 11,000 people. Bonaire, along with Aruba and Curaçao, make up the Netherland Antilles, or Lesser Antilles. The people there speak Dutch, English, Spanish, and Papamiento, the native language.
Bonaire is known internationally for its SCUBA diving. No fishing or collecting is allowed on the island or in the water. Consequently, there are species of aquatic life there that do not exist anywhere else in the world. This seahorse is similar to one I saw on my very first dive!

¡Bonaire! Solamente está ochenta kilómetros al norte de Venezuela, pero parece muy diferente. Kralendijk es el capital, pero es muy pequeño -- la isla solamente tiene 11.000 personas. Bonaire, con Aruba y Curaçao, comprenden los Antilles Nederlandes. La gente allí habla holandés, inglés, español, y papamiento, la lengua nativa.
Se conoce en todo el mundo para el buceo de SCUBA. No se puede pescar ni colegir nada en la isla ni la agua. Por eso, hay especies de vida en la agua allí que no viven en otro lugares del mundo. ¡Éste caballo del mar es muy similar a uno que vi en mi primer buceo!
