Intercomponent forces
This page provides exercises in identifying the intercomponent forces present in compounds (and elements). Its operation is very straightforward and there are a few guidelines. Please read the following before beginning the exercises.
- Pressing "New Problem: will list a compound and give a choice of possible intercomponent forces
- Select the strongest force you would expect to be present. Remember that a compound of any complexity is likely to have more than one force present.
- As much as possible, the formula given is intended to indicate the atom attachments, but there are several things if which you should be aware
- OH represents a hydrogen bound to an oxygen
- CHO the hydrogen is bound to the C not the O
- You should know the common strong acids like nitric and recall that the H is bound to an O even though the standard formula doesn't indicate that.
- You only get one attempt per compound-for obvious reasons. If you get it incorrect, the answer is shown.
