not be able to answer all emails immediately. If you need
to consult me, please come during office hours, or consult
in the classroom before the lecture begins.
Prerequisites
- Calculus 2
- Knowledge of MATLAB (may be substituted with an
alternate scientific programming language with my
permission) .
Textbook
You are required to have access to a copy of Linear
Algebra and its Applications, 3rd edition, by
David C. Lay.
Online materials
Online course materials will be placed
here (password protected). This page also forms the
course diary, which will contain homework and other information.
Objective
Aimed at undergraduate science and engineering majors, this
course provides a modern introduction to basic linear algebra
and some of its elementary applications, emphasizing the
computational aspects of the subject.
Outline
We will cover the topics listed in the
undergraduate catalog: Linear equations, matrices and
determinants; Vector spaces and linear transformations; Inner
products and eigenvalues.
After these core topics, we will study further topics like the
singular value decomposition, and discuss applications.
Evaluation
Grades will be assigned based on performance in 4 examinations
held in class. There will be no final exam. (Make-up
opportunities are rarely offered, and only under serious and
documentable circumstances. See more at
The Fine Print below.)
Exam dates: Please note these dates. They are
being announced at the very beginning, so you make no other
plans.
- January 29, 2010
- February 17, 2010
- March 17, 2010
- April 21, 2010
Calculators and computers are not allowed in the exams.
Current UF policies (after the institution of `minus' letter
grades) for assigning grade points can be found
here.
The Fine Print
- University's honesty policy: All students are
expected to know and abide by the University of Florida
Honor Code.
- Copyrighted materials: All course materials
handed out in class or placed on the web are protected
by copyright laws, and are for personal use
only. Multiple copies or sale of these materials is
prohibited.
- Attendance policy: Class attendance is
required. According to the
registrar's catalog,
``university recognizes the right of the individual
professor to make attendance mandatory. After due
warning, professors may prohibit further attendance and
subsequently assign a failing grade for excessive
absences.''
- Written medical documentation is required for make-up
exams. Students who miss an exam without discussing
with me at least 24 hours before the exam will get no
make-up opportunity.
- Calculator Policy: Use of calculators is
not allowed during exams.
- Religious Holidays: In accordance with the university's
policy,
students
upon prior notification of their instructors,
shall be excused from class or other scheduled academic activity to
observe a religious holy day of their faith.
- Students with disabilities: Students
requesting classroom accommodation must first register
with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students
Office will provide documentation to the student who
must then provide this documentation to me when
requesting accommodation.
