Ei wie! Ei wo! So wendet sich nach aussen, nach innen der Geist. Prof. Fuller's invitation: Wende?? Not my area of expertise. At DSAP I've already done Humboldt, German SF, German business. My main focus is pedagogy, and what I suggested was "A Quarter-Century of Textbook Writing and Software Production." Wende?? But wait! "Quarter century". In 1985 I was busily writing a first-year German text, and it came out in fall of 1988. Hmmm 1) DDR content; 2) market conditions and modes of production and distribution So let's take a walk down memory lane, with an occasional look over the Wall, and then I'll bring you up to date about textbooks and software and CALI/CALL (CALT??), with an occasional look toward Karl Marx, or at least economics. Very quickly all the publishers were rushing to put out revised editions of their books. 1. History of language teaching and textbooks, with or without technology; 0018 Führer 2. 1983 and me: ACTFL training AND PSU FLL gets its first computer! So: proficiency-oriented pedagogy AND CALL Language labs; Bill & tapes; walkman rev but before that: ~1958 tried to teach myself German (Russian, Japanese) - no go; 1962 built first computer; 1963 German classes at GPHS; 1965-69 German (Literature, of course) major in college, 1979 German (literature, of course) PhD; 1988: WB published, with software; much DTP and tech work brought to PSU 3. WB: Why and how 4. WB: technology from the start; GW-BASIC, Slide-Show Magician, World-Builder, S 6. ¿Cómo? and other Big Plans, including rotating series of textbooks and sub-contracting production for other books 7. The fate of WB: gluepot errors, change in market, change in inventory and tax law, first wave of proficiency ebbs (with regard to textbooks - prayers were answered, and the answers were rejected) 8. Wiley pulls the plug, but we slog on, with Spanish subsidizing German 9. Switch from ink-on-paper to CALI 1993?? B&W on little Macs 1995: Color on bigger Macs 1996? Have to go cross-platform and quickly, so dumb it down 1997: PDF (Acro), with several stages of moving from paper-page concept to screen concept 1998?? Browser-based: cross-platform AND smarter than Acrobat; YEARS of html and Javascript; final version 2005: internet or disk 2003: Runtime Revolution 10. Meanwhile, the tense relation of ink-on-paper and CALI (and money matters and student awareness) in the Big World of language instruction and learning 11. Fischer's Laws of CALI: (Es irrt der Mensch, solang er strebt. a) grammar/vocab are the defaults b) 7-year cycle of implementation c) publishers will go no faster than they absolutely have to d) few authors can do technology themselves 12.
