Introductory Assignment

Immediately after the first meeting of the class, do either (a) or (b), as appropriate:

a) If you have taken German 101 or 102 at PSU in recent years, send the following email to your instructor:

"Hallo und Guten ___,

In diesem Semester studiere ich Deutsch bei Herrn / Frau [instructor name], und auch [other subjects].

[Add a couple sentences that would be suitable in a note you are writing after spring break.]

[appropriate closing]"

Your assignment will be scored like the messages you write your instructor when you start each Kontext.

b) If you are new to this course (not just changing from one section to another), do introductory assignments 1, 2, 3 & 5 below.

About Scoring Guides: The course uses the standard 6-level system for performance evaluation. Key features of the learning activity are described with performance profiles at the various levels. If the scoring guide for your activity is available to you while you are doing the activity, you can use it as a recipe to get the grade you want - if you do the learning that produces the results described in the scoring guide.
Course Description & Initial Syllabus with Assignments 1 & 2 (Fall 2003), 48K Four-page presentation: staffing, materials, calendar, goals, testing & grading, preliminary syllabus, and first TWO assignments. Read this the first quarter you enter first-year German.

What to Do and Get First Handout (Infoblatt) Part of Assignment #2: how to obtain and organize your materials and begin studying (32K)

Assignment #3 is a questionnaire that checks whether you know how your materials are organized, and what you think about the components of a language-learning program. It was distributed in photocopy form in class. If you haven't done it yet, check with your instructor, or download it, fill it in, and return it. You should also download and consult the Scoring Guide.

Assignment #4 is the response to the video about popular images of language learning. The worksheet was distributed in class. If you missed the class, talk to your instructor.

Assignment #5 uses the "ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines," which are in the photocopy packet and are also available (PDF) from this link. Copy or print the two pages. Read the Guidelines for both reading and speaking. Then, for both reading and speaking, mark three of the individual guidelines to show: 1) what your level of proficiency was when you began German 101; 2) what your level of proficiency is NOW; 3) what level of proficiency you expect to reach at the end of German 103.
