Take the on-line WebCAPE test

last modified: 9/21/11

In this assignment you will take an on-line language placement test and email your score to your instructor (or print the screen with your score and take it to your instructor). This test is required but it is not graded, and the placement score and recommendation it offers are not binding - but if you have had significant previous German they may help you make a wise decision about whether to move to a higher level course or stay in this one.

Time needed: 1/2 hour after you read these instructions and log in to the test center.

Use this link to log in:

The link opens the PSU World Languages advising pages. There you can read about the test. Note the password to use, and then scroll down to where you see the link to the test itself: "• Placement Tests for French, German, and Spanish (WebCAPE)". Take the test, note your score, and email it to your instructor. If you prefer instead, you can screen-print the screen that shows your score and take the printout to your instructor. While you're on the WLL advising page, please take a few minutes to read about the PSU foreign-language requirement and other advising topics.

Grading: Your score on this assignment will be either 6 or 0, and your grade either A+ or F; either you took the test or you didn't. The score you get on the test itself will not affect your grade on the assignment.

Note: Take the test even if you have never studied German. The test is “interactive-adaptive”: it ends after a few items if your responses to the items show that that you have little or no knowledge of the language. We will use the scores as base-line numbers for your later tests, and your test-taking behavior will help us counsel you about learning styles and strategies. Your score on the test does not affect your grade on the assignment; the only factors that do are whether you take the test, and when.
