Main Topic(s): Thinking through the CBI projects; more possibilities, closer specifications

More project ideas (draft)

New sources: ••

(45) For basic project parameters and timeline, see retrospective notes about the previous meeting.

Now let's brainstorm: If you have ideas, bring them forth. If we run short of those, we'll take up some subject areas that will try to avoid (film) your own likely interests:

pharmacology? Chinese for dragon boat teams? income tax? Administration of Justice? office technology?

Maybe use the North Carolina "Environmental Science Study Abroad" course plan as a basis for adding a CBI language component (before the trip? during the trip? after the trip?). Expansion: the "Reaching for PASS" demo course module about "Encounters"

Can you think of a topic (not necessarily an academic one) whose socially-appropriate text type would make it appropriate for a Novice-High CBI lesson / module? (Hint: someone named Fischer, but more famous than your instructor)

Possibly split into small discussion groups for brainstorming about topics or the scoring guides

(10) Break: Go get your coffee or your snack, but bring it back. We'll start promptly after 10 minutes, with or without you!

(20) More discussion; additional point: Inquiry and Gen Ed courses as places to inject CBI without rocking any sacred cowboats

About lesson plans for FL classes: Rifkin in FLA (Summer 2003)

About thematic modules and the National [Foreign Langauge] Standards

(15) If time: Continuation of presentation about the "Humboldt Project" - a long-term venture in CBI and beyond CBI. Some new factors (Civic Engagement, Internationalization Initiataivie). NOTE: Given the shortness of a 10-week quarter, I want to consider adding more structure to project #2 by urging people to do it within the framework of the HP, but with enough flexibility that it can standalone. If time: GER 399 "Science Fiction Radio Drama Production" and its earlier version, the "Papa Joe" Project;

NOTE: For new reading see the course schedule or the documents list (once I get it caught up again).

Upcoming class meeting(s) (#11 6 2008 Tuesday)

From here on in, most of the class time will be for discussion of projects, or demonstrations of what I do or can find other people out there doing. There will be some reading along the way, with occasional discussion in class.

First finished project DUE

Second finished project DUE Tuesday, 20 May

Upcoming assignment(s)

This section offers a PREVIEW, not activated assignments. Assignments are made, with announcement of their deadlines, both in class and on the "schedule" page.

Start thinking about both Project #2 (Idea for extended CBI actifity, such as a two-week thematic module) and Project #3 (Idea for Large-Scale CBI - something on the course level)

Announcements
