Main Topic(s): esource searching; teaching & testing writing, listening, reading

(10) Synthesis about several matters (cont'd.): group discussion about two particularly problematic issues: "standardized test", "standards-based education", and "teaching to the test"; starter topic: what do YOU think the WA math test looks like? How might the various stakeholders respond to it? (If we don't have time for this, try holding your own discussion, whether in your own head or with a classmate.)

+

(40) Teaching and assessing writing: small-group discussion - what sorts of second-language writing tests and tasks have YOU encountered?; the situation in TESOL and (if anyone in the group knows, English); the situation in FL ("snapshot" ratings of ACTFL proficiency; written vs. Writing; "schizophrenia" of conventional FL workbook-type exercises); and in PSU FLL (assessment activities); ACTFL Writing Proficiency Guidelines; an article about responding to student writing (0009, Barnett).

(10) Break: Go get your coffee or your snack, but bring it back. We'll start promptly after 10 minutes, with or without you!

(10) Assignment 4: Brain-storming in small groups

(20) Major project update: 1) emphasis on the MP as "Big Idea", not finished assessment product; 2) examle(s) of projects under development or in their "starting thought" stage

-

(10) More about the FL and AL "cultures": the background and professional pursuits of the course instructors (here Fischer: overview • more about projects & publications)

(10) Q&A as desired, or maybe an early quit (YES). For a Valentines Day-related example of a language-learning activity with scoring guide, you could take a look at the GER 102 "Shopping and Gifts" individual project. :-)

Upcoming class meetings (19 February 2008, Tuesday)

Testing listening and reading.

We're inviting some "celebrities" to come tell us about high-level assessments that they do. Stay tuned.

Upcoming assignment(s)

This section offers a PREVIEW, not activated assignments. Assignments are made, with announcement of their deadlines, both in class and on the "schedule" page.

Assignment 4 has been simplified, and its scoring guide is now ready.

We have again revised (downward!) the list of assignments for the course (see course Calendar, bottom of page). More about that soon.

Announcements

Check with AL or Sara/Fischer about upcoming visits from AL job candidates. All of them are connected to assessment and (FL people please note) two of them have extensive FL experience.
