In 1976 King Harvest sat on the corner of 24th and Ankeny. At that time it was a small hippie grocery store where you could find all sorts of interesting things from Macrobiotic to Organic; all before eating that way was “trendy.” In Portland, King Harvest, was one of the first counter culture food stores; there really weren’t too many alternatives. There was a sign in the window that read, “The Poor Man’s Friend” and it certainly had its following.
By 1986 King Harvest had moved to 15th and Morrison where it became primarily a juice manufacturing factory. Fresh juice (you’ll notice the carrot lives on in the name-King Harvest), Wheat grass, Pita-pocket sandwiches, and Hummus were delivered fresh to many grocery stores around the Portland area.
After twenty years in business, 1996 brought change to King Harvest. They were slowly switching their concentration onto Hummus instead of Juice. Since then the Hummus line has increased and the juice has become a sweet memory.
The coffee shop and drive thru now offer Marigold coffee, fresh home baked goods, sweet deals, and friendly service. The hummus can be found in the coffee shop as well as many grocery stores in Portland. The staff is small but work hard to make and deliver the Freshest Hummus in Portland.
