ABOUT THE COURSE SEQUENCE:
ART 224, 225, 226 GRAPHIC DESIGN I: Graphic
design is the use of visual images, signs and typography, working together,
to create solutions to visual communication problems. The scope of these
solutions is vast and varied. Assignments and exercises are geared toward
creative problem solving through the application of graphic/visual images,
signs and typography. Students are encouraged to explore many variations
of a given solution prior to settling on one final solution. Development
of assignments to obtain the most successful design solution is emphasized
throughout the first year of graphic design and the remainder of each student's
education at PSU as well.
OBJECTIVES:
- To develop the ability to translate thought
into visual expression.
- To develop the ability to generate and develop
original images.
- To develop the ability to research and investigate
complex graphic problems and to find original and creative solutions for
them.
- To develop skills in the application of design
principles and to apply this knowledge within their assignments.
ORGANIZATION:
ART 224, 225, 226, Graphic Design I, is a
three-term studio course that must be taken in sequence and concurrently
with ART 227, 228, 229, Computer Graphics I. Students are expected to attend
all classes and to work on assignments during class time and out of class
as well. It is generally expected that for each hour spent in class another
hour should be spent out of class. Classes are organized so assignments
can be worked on in class and where constructive feedback will be the mainstay
of each class meeting...either individually or as a group. It is important
to realize that each assignment offered is a stepping stone to the next
assignment. Work must be completed on time to gain the maximum advantage
and greatest educational experience.
COURSE PROCESS AND EVALUATION:
- Attendance is mandatory. Excessive absences
and perpetual tardiness will affect your final grade. Lecture aspects of
the course will be conducted at the beginning of each class meeting.
- Assignments will be evaluated during group
or individual critiques. Participation by all members of the class is required.
Constructive feedback is welcomed for all involved in this course.
- Grading criteria is as follows:
- a. Success in solving the assigned problems.
- b. Processes utilized in solving the problems.
- c. The ability to orally support one's design
solution.
- d. Craftsmanship/Draughtsmanship/Presentation.
- e. Participation in group discussions.
- f. Development of each assignment in the form
of a working notebook of ideas if and when asked for as part of an assignment.
- Assignments turned in after the announced
deadline are downgraded one letter grade for each class meeting they are
late. NOTE: Ten minutes into a class meeting is considered late. Generally,
assignments may be done over for a new grade but his "new" grade
will be averaged in with the existing grade. Assignments will not be accepted
after the last regular class meeting. No "incompletes" except
as described in the PSU Bulletin.
