Biographical Details:
Stephen Albert Russell was the oldest son of Lewis and Mary Ann Russell. He was almost certainly born in Gentry County, Missouri, on October 8, 1854, and seems to have been known familiarly throughout his life as "Albert". He and Missouri Belle Guthrie were married on January 20, 1878, very likely in Gentry County, although this is not entirely certain and some family accounts assert that they were, instead, married in Norton County, Kansas. What is known is that the Guthrie family was living in Jackson Township in Gentry County in the late 1870's. This presumption is further supported by the population schedule of the 1880 US Census for Gentry County, which included the household of Albert and Belle Russell as resident in Jackson Township and which, in addtion, included a one year old son, Arlie, born in Missouri. Indeed, some of Belle's brothers did subsequently move to Norton County; however, this seems to have occurred several years later. Apparently, at least three more children were born to Albert and Belle Russell in Gentry County. Indeed, early Missouri birth and death records indicate that their fourth child, Elsie, survived only for ten days. In addition, an original manuscript family register of the Russell family includes two more children, Herbert and Flora, born in 1884 and 1886, respectively, who also died as infants; however, these two children do not appear in any Missouri civil records. Nevertheless, since in the State of Missouri between the years 1883 and 1893, births were mandated by statute to be recorded within each county, although not entirely conclusive, the absence of the two younger infants from birth records provides circumstantial evidence in support of the presumption that Albert and Belle left Missouri and moved to Kansas or Nebraska probably between the end of January and beginning of December in 1884. Accordingly, it is believed that their son, Harmon, was born in Pawnee County, Nebraska, in 1888. Likewise, their youngest daughter, Minnie, was also born in Nebraska in 1890, although the county is uncertain, but a reasonable assumption is that she was also born in Pawnee County. Concomitantly, it is known that Albert's uncle, Solomon William Perkins, had settled in Pawnee County prior to 1870. Even so, a land patent for one hundred and sixty acres in "Section Eighteen in Township Three of Range Twenty-two" in Norton County, Kansas, was issued to Stephen A. Russell on January 5, 1889.1 The parcel is located about six miles southeast of the town of Norton and, moreover, was a cash purchase rather than a homestead preemption; hence, improvements and five years of residence were not required. Presumably, Albert and Belle Russell lived in this location, but they also seem to have been resident in Nebraska at least some of the time. In any case, family tradition asserts that Belle Guthrie Russell died on April 13, 1892, in Kansas (reportedly in Norton County in Belle Plain Township, which corresponds to "Township Three of Range Twenty"). The cause of her death is unknown.. Moreover, she was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Turkey Creek Township near the town of Burchard in Pawnee County, Nebraska.Source Notes and Citations:Subserquently, Stephen Albert Russell married Anna Rebecca Masters on March 16, 1893. She was born in Illinois, but presumably they were married in Nebraska, although the location of their wedding has not been determined. They were the parents of four children, Edith, Lewis, Gertrude, and Edward. Of these, the three oldest were born in Pawnee County and the youngest was born in Norton County. This implies that Albert and Anna Masters Russell moved from Pawnee to Norton County in 1898 or 1899. This inference is further supported by the population schedule of the 1900 US Census for Norton County in which the household of Albert and Anna Russell was affirmed as resident in Almena Township. Moreover, in addition to the parents, the family consisted of the four children of Albert and Anna as well as three of the children of Albert and Belle Russell, viz., Ezra, Harmon, and Minnie. According to reliable family tradition, Stephen Albert and Anna Masters Russell subsequently lived in the town of Superior in Nuckolls County, Nebraska. This is confirmed by population schedules of the 1910, 1920, and 1930 US Censuses for Nuckolls County. Moreover, according to draft records of World War I, their two unmarried sons, Lewis and Edward, indicated a home address of 203 Bloom Street, Superior, Nebraska. Therefore, it is evident that the Russell family moved from Norton County to Superior sometime in the first decade of the twentieth century. (Superior is located at the extreme southern edge of Nuckolls County, between one and two miles north of the Nebraska-Kansas boundary.) However, the obituary of Delilah Russell Johnson, Stephen Albert's older sister, asserts that he was living in Culbertson, Hitchcock County, Nebraska, in 1934. This is reasonable because census records confirm that Albert's son, Ezra, evidently lived in this locality most of his life. In contrast, Albert's oldest son, Arlie, moved to Oklahoma, apparently first settling near relatives in Dewey County, but later living with his wife and children in the town of Shidler in Osage County.2 (Younger sons, Ira and Harmon, moved to California and the Pacific Northwest.) Even so, it seems likely that Stephen Albert Russell lived in Hitchcock County only for a few years at most, since family tradition asserts that Albert and Anna Russell lived in the town of Superior during most their later lives. Indeed, cenus records confirm that in 1940 they were resident on South Bloom Street in Superior. As with many of his relatives, Stephen Albert Russell was a farmer. Even so, the 1920 US Census indicates his occupation as a shoemaker with his own shop. It is not known if Albert learned this trade when young and if, concmitantly, he had ever practiced it earlier in his life. Stephen Albert Russell died on March 18, 1943, in Superior. Anna Masters Russell also died in Superior on June 10, 1947. They are both buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
